Thinking of my Dad and Cody today. I am at the hardware store doing some cleaning. Feeling sad.
Oh my goodness, it makes me sad too! Remember all the good times at the Teen Center upstairs. Watching "Happy Days" and playing ping-pong! I'm headed to the Burg tomorrow for my niece's wedding on Saturday. I will think about you and your Dad when I pass by! Good memories Sweetie!

Just remember all the laughter that went on around that pot belly stove. Jack still talks about all the guys. Fond memories!

Sent a prayer up for you when I read this. You are loved by soooo many people. But that said, my heart goes out to you and love too.

Sorry you are sad. Don't cry because its over ..smile because it happened.

God Love Ya Charity! This has been such a tough year for you. Just hope you know you have a WHOLE LOT of people propping you up. We all love you and are thinking of you as you tackle these difficult life changing events. HANG IN THERE GIRL!

I can't even begin to imagine the sadness on your heart right now, praying that it be replaced by so many sweet memories

The Potbelly Stove
It’s sad when a great family business like Connell Hardware closes.
I grew up in both Reynoldsburg and Pataskala Areas. Connell was always a good place when you needed something for the House or Yard. I also would go there for my Fishing License before the State of Ohio decided to make that computerized. I also remember if I was in there when the weather was cold, I would spend a little more time by the Potbelly Stove and get warm. That Stove was great. I like many others will miss the store.

Overwhelming wonderful smell
I was so happy to read the article (in the Columbus Dispatch) on Connell's Hardware store. I have been a friend of Charity Connell's for 50+ years, but even before that I visited the store at a very young age. My grandmother would pull me in a wagon down to the store and buy seeds and plants and whatever else she needed. Did you know this hardware store had many smells? Let's talk about onion sets? Overwhelming wonderful smell. What about varnish, cleaners, wax and lawnmower oil and gas? We can't forget that.
Yes indeed Ralph was a gentle soul sitting behind the desk balancing his receipts Charity and I would bound in there and I would hear Ralph say, "Hey, Kitzmiller what are you both up to "? He always called me by my last name until the last time I saw him. I was never Cindy Kitzmiller, just Kitzmiller. Charity and I would run up and down the hill in the front of the store, It was a hill with our little legs back then but now it is a small grade in the floor. Geez, we had fun. As we got older we would go down and buy replacement keys we needed and my dad would send me on an errand to "the Store", "tell Ralph I need this" and Ralph would look at the drawing on a small piece of paper and hand me what I needed. "Tell Jack this is what will work".
Connell's hardware is a family and friend establishment. When my Uncle Ted Kibbey retired as the Reynoldsburg Postmaster he worked with Ralph at Connell's. My friend Steve Ruth also worked for Ralph. Oh and I introduced Cody to Charity. The store closing is not about nuts and bolts, windows and screens, it is a closing of a life style, one that has sadly been replaced by larger and more diverse choices. But mark my word those larger fancy stores will never have the touch of Ralph and the wonderful smell of the unforgettable onion sets.
